24 October 2008
On October 21 2008 the Indonesian House of Representatives ratified the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Charter. Indonesia joins Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in having ratified the ASEAN Charter (for further details please see “Senate Ratifies ASEAN Charter”).
Indonesia, the largest member and one of ASEAN's founders, is the final member to ratify the charter. The grouping has now met the political deadline for ratification by the ASEAN Summit scheduled for mid-December in Thailand. The charter will enter into force 30 days after the date of deposit of the tenth instrument of ratification with the ASEAN secretary-general. The deposit is expected within the next few weeks.
